Nontopological operations are the basic operations that do not involve topology as defined in the coverage model.

Nontopological editing refers to a variety of basic editing operations that can modify simple features and can create new features from existing features. Like topological editing, many of these basic operations also use the snapping tolerances to snap points and lines and the line and polygon sketches to edit features. The difference is that the basic operations do not involve topology as defined in coverage, a map topology, or a geodatabase.

Extend/Trim Lines

One can extend or trim a line to meet a target line.

Delete/Move Features

One can delete or move one or more selected features, which may be points, lines or polygons. Because each polygon in nontopological data is a unit, separate from other polygons, moving a polygon means placing the polygon on top of an existing polygon while creating a void area in its original location.

Reshaping Features

One can alter the shape of a line by moving, deleting, or adding points on the line. The same method can be used to reshape a polygon.

Split Lines and Polygons

One can sketch a new line that crosses an existing line to split the line, or sketch a split line through a polygon to split the polygon.
