GIS as Science of Points

A satellite-based device that records x, y, z coordinates and other data. Lines represent geographic features too narrow to be displayed as an area at a given scale, such as contours street centerlines, or streams.

GIS often claims to be a science – geospatial information science or geographic information science. In the strictest sense, GIS is a computer system capable of integrating, storing, editing, analyzing, sharing, and displaying geographically referenced information. GIS is a tool that allows users to create user define searches, analyze the geospatial information, and edit geospatial data.

GIS science is very much related with the geoinformatics that is a shorter name for geographic information technology. Geographic information is created by manipulating geographic data in a computer system.

Four Main Tasks of Geoinformatics

The four main tasks of geoinformatics are:

  • Collection and processing of geodata,
  • Development and management of database of geodata,
  • Analysis and modelling of geodata, and
  • Development and integration of logic and computer tools and software for the first three tasks.

In GIS, an automated system for the design, drafting and display of graphically oriented information. Information about a data set is called metadata.
